Behavioral Disorders Q & A

What are the signs of behavioral disorders?

Behavioral disorders cause a persistent pattern of problem behaviors at home, in school, and in social settings. They can manifest in many ways. Some of the behavioral disorders treated at Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center are:

Conduct disorder

Conduct disorder affects children and young people aged 10-19. It features symptoms of aggression, destruction, rule violation, and deceit. In general, children with conduct disorder struggle with proper social behaviors and may find it hard to function day-to-day.

Oppositional defiant disorder

Oppositional defiant disorder affects up to 16% of school-aged children, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The disorder features frequent and ongoing hostile, defiant, and uncooperative behaviors toward parents, teachers, or other authority figures, which disrupts daily life.

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD)

DMDD affects children and teenagers. It’s characterized by frequent and intense irritability, anger, and temper tantrums.

Intermittent explosive disorder

Intermittent explosive disorder can affect children and adults. It features bursts of rage that are often out of proportion to the situation. Outside the outbursts, it’s common to have normal, balanced behavior.

Because symptoms can overlap with behavioral disorders, and behavioral disorders often occur simultaneously with other disorders, it’s important to schedule a psychiatric evaluation to get clarity about what you’re dealing with and how to manage it.

Is autism associated with behavioral disorders?

Some people who have autism show signs of behavioral disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder.

About 45% of people with autism also have disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD).

About 8 in 10 people with intermittent explosive disorder have another condition, such as autism, an intellectual disorder, or bipolar disorder.

How are behavioral disorders treated?

Behavioral disorder treatment usually focuses on a combination of medication management and supportive therapy. Many medications can help manage symptoms, reduce the frequency of harmful behaviors, and lessen the intensity of problem behaviors.

Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center provides personalized psychiatric care focused on the whole patient’s needs. This includes not only medication but also help with lifestyle changes, coping strategies, and support for the family of children and young people with behavioral disorders.
